CONCERT REVIEW: FAN-TAN at PIANOS, DECEMBER 18, 2012 | NEW YORK MUSIC NEWS

fan tanI first saw Fan-Tan this past summer, at a bizarre venue called Big Mouth in Bed-Stuy that turned out to be someone’s house. The bands played down the basement, graffiti art on all the walls, with cans of beer being sold out of the refrigerator in the kitchen upstairs. There were five or six bands on the bill that night, but one grabbed my attention and turned me into an instant follower; that band was Fan-Tan.

Singer and guitarist Ryan Lee creates a refreshing new-wave guitar sound and plays in a style that is both driving and laid-back at the same time. The best moments in Fan-Tan’s songs are when the driving bass of Sandee K, the pounding, fill-heavy drums of Mike Sherburn, and Lee’s cool-headed guitar sync up together like a crashing wave of sound. Their songs welcome melody with open arms and Lee’s vocals seem to float over top the musical interplay of their instruments.

They played an opening set Tuesday night at Pianos, an intimate but loud venue in the Lower East Side. Recently back home in New York from a trip to Los Angeles, they plowed through their set at Pianos, no doubt gaining a few more loyal followers. In talking to the band after they left the stage, and they revealed that 2013 is going to be a busy year for them, with an EP due out soon and a full length album due out later in the year. Be sure to check them out when they play Union Hall in Brooklyn on January 5!

CAPITOL RECORDS SIGNS R&B SINGER/SONGWRITER JARVIS | NEW SINGLE “MAKE A LITTLE ROOM” 2013

jarvisLos Angeles, CA – Capitol Records is thrilled to announce the signing of rising R&B star Jarvis. While Jarvis’ single “Make a Little Room” continues to stir up major radio buzz, the singer/songwriter is hard at work recording his debut album, entitled Cardiology, set for release in 2013.

Jarvis Shaffer is no stranger to the R&B music scene. At 14, the talented Tulsa, Oklahoma native relocated to Atlanta where he perfected his talent and pursued music as a career. In 2004, he signed with Grammy Award-winning producer Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings. Fans were introduced to Jarvis’ engaging tenor vocals on his first single, “Radio.” The mid-tempo charmer climbed into Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart after its release. Soon thereafter, Jarvis attracted the attention of Disturbing Tha Peace CEO Chaka Zulu which led to the singer’s 2008 second single, “Pretty Girl,” featuring a cameo by DTP’s co-founder and flagship artist Ludacris.

Now, Jarvis is ready to take R&B to the next level. Signed to Capitol Records through Starstruck Entertainment Group, the crooner released his mix-tape titled Heartache in September 2012, featuring collabos from DJ Khaled, Waka Flocka Flame and Lil Scrappy. The mixtape, inspired by Jarvis’ lifelong passion for music, spun off the single “Make a Little Room,” which is available now on iTunes. Check out the lyrics video here and be on the lookout for the official video set for release early next year.

At the age of 23, Jarvis is on the verge of achieving his place in the R&B world. “I want to bring some of the soul back to R&B but also come with a little flair,” he declares, “The music I’m making is really about what I feel has been lost: emotion. I’m not chasing a sound, a look … not anything. I’m doing me.”

Hunters album cover

CONCERT REVIEW: HUNTERS AT DEATH BY AUDIO DECEMBER 11, 2012 | NEW YORK MUSIC NEWS

Hunters album coverBrooklyn band Hunters played a killer show last night at Death By Audio, the very D.I.Y. venue in Williamsburg. Lead singer Isabel Almeida, a pink haired punk rocker who is at times seductive and at other times full of rock angst, put on a hell of a show, at one point leaving the stage and throwing herself on the floor in the midst of the audience. Guitarist Derek Watson also ended up on the floor, on his back kicking his legs up in the air, all while keeping perfect time on his guitar. Considering the cover art for their album Hands On Fire, one wonders if they make a point to hit the deck at every gig. “You’re bleeding,” Watson told Almeida between songs. Almeida put a finger to her lip and brought it back for inspection. “I think I am,” she replied coolly.
Hunters have an excellent single in “Deadbeat”, a guttural guitar riff with tag-team vocal duties shared by Watson and Almeida, the latter of whom yelps “I want it/I need it!” on the bridge, a true rock and roll expression of desire if there ever was one.
Also on the bill were Desert Sharks, an all-female outfit who mix Toby Vail-like vocals (Vail-esque?) with garage rock riffs and surf-rock inspired drums.

Smashing-Pumpkins

CONCERT REVIEW: SMASHING PUMPKINS & MORNING PARADE(video) AT BARCLAYS CENTER DECEMBER 10, 2012 | NEW YORK MUSIC NEWS

Opening act Morning Parade wowed the crowd Monday night at the Barclays Center with thunderous, danceable beats, warm vocal harmonies, and staccato guitar parts on songs like “A&E” and “Headlights”, the latter their breakout hit from their self-titled album released earlier this year. “That was our last single,” said lead singer Steve Sparrow, “and this is our next one,” before playing “Under The Stars”, a song that starts out as soft and gentle as an early morning sunrise, then a little past the one minute mark, morphs into a driving beat with a rock growl. Morning Parade is clearly a band on the rise, having already performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno here in the US, and having played Hyde Park for the London Olympics torch relay this summer. Their closing number, “Born Alone”, is the final track on their album, was a good way to say goodnight to the Brooklyn audience. “Can you show me true romance/can you show me how to dance?” Sparrow sang. Morning Parade certainly showed Brooklyn both of those things, and will soon likely show the rest of the world.

Smashing Pumpkins took the stage at 9:00pm and played for a full two and a half hours. “On this tour, we play Oceania (their latest album, released in June of this year) in full, and then if I’m in the mood, we’ll play some of those dusty classics,” said Pumpkins frontman/mastermind Billy Corgan. The Barclays Center crowd reacted with wild applause, hoping to cheer Billy up enough to play some of their favorite tracks from 1993’s Siamese Dream or 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. With other bands, the paying audience is sure to get the radio hits that the band is known for, but with Billy Corgan, it’s always a gamble. Luckily for all who were there (and for those who will see the recorded performance later – there were 3D cameras rolling the whole time for a likely upcoming DVD release), Corgan & Co. started the post-Oceania set with a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and then began knocking out the Pumpkins most beloved radio hits.

They played a furious version of “X.Y.U.”, a b-side from Mellon Collie, that had Billy screaming and beating his chest like a crazed gorilla, then cradling his Stratocaster in his arms like a lost boy holding a teddy bear, at which point he began reciting Mary Had a Little Lamb. Perhaps continuing on his exploration of the innocence of youth, they then played “Disarm”, the hit single that juxtaposes the lyrics “I used to be a little boy,” with “the killer in me is the killer in you.”
Hardcore fans who had purchased the 1996 box set “The Aeroplane Flies High”, or new fans who might have purchased the recently re-released expanded version of Mellon Collie on iTunes, would have appreciated that Billy started mega-hit “Tonight, Tonight” by playing the reprise version found on either of those collections before playing the “proper” version that everyone knows & loves. The Pumpkins had a giant spherical video screen behind them which played the 1902 film “Trip to the Moon” that served as the inspiration for the “Tonight, Tonight” music video that won MTV’s Video of the Year in 1996.
Towards the end of the set, Billy took a break to introduce the rest of the Pumpkins, which may be different than the Pumpkins you remember: Jeff “The Shredder” Schroeder on guitar, Nicole Fiorentino on bass, and 22-year-old Mike Byrne from Portland, OR on drums. “What do hipsters think of drum solos?” Billy asked. He then showed everyone his Tebow pose, later admitting “I’m killing my mystique.” Billy’s mood must have brightened after all, because he next treated Brooklyn to a “new, new, new” song called Dream Machine, a sprawling epic that toggled between soft & reflective and loud & abrasive, as only the Pumpkins can do. “For those of you on drugs, now is a good time to leave, because you’re not going to like this journey,” Billy warned beforehand.
The band came back for an encore, now over two hours in, playing “Eva Adore”, “Cherub Rock”, and closing out the night with “Zero.” Smashing Pumpkins’ tour was officially over, but with Billy’s prolific writing habit, they are likely to be back soon.

YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE: REGGIE WATTS AT POP-UP ETSY SHOP IN SOHO | NEW YORK MUSIC NEWS

Last night, Team Coco regular Reggie Watts played a free show for lovers of handmade crafts at the Etsy pop-up shop in SoHo. He took the stage around 9 pm after a gospel choir warmed up the crowd with Christmas carols. Dressed in a green knit Santa Claus sweater, he quipped that “Etsy” stood for “energistic topography synergy y-chromosome.” If you haven’t seen Mr. Watts on Conan or on IFC’s Comedy Bang Bang, his performances are part stand-up comedy, part improvisation, and a heavy dose of true musical talent; so much that you wonder why he isn’t The Biggest Performer In The World. With a variety of gadgets and looping devices, he records a beatbox track, then starts layering vocals, usually creating three part harmonies with himself. He then adds soulful organ riffs and other instrumentation, creating a complete song before your very eyes that comes across as so genuine that you would swear it must have been a long-forgotten classic from the 70′s. While Etsy and Reggie Watts seem at first like an odd pairing, it is clear that he is as much of an independent craftsman as those who feature items for sale on the Etsy site. During his performance, he was no doubt inspired by the items for sale in the store around him, remarking between songs that they were sure to inspire both “awe” and “awww!”

The Etsy Holiday Shop closed for the season yesterday, but with any luck it will re-open (likely in a new location) next year.

SMASHING PUMPKINS WITH MORNING PARADE TO PLAY MAKE-UP SHOW AT BARCLAY’S CENTER DECEMBER 10 | NEW YORK MUSIC NEWS

Halloween is back! Smashing Pumpkins and opening act Morning Parade are playing Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Monday, December 10 after the show scheduled for All Hallow’s Eve was postponed as the Frankenstorm battered Brooklyn. It’s a shame that we probably won’t get to see Billy Corgan in costume as Jack Skellington, but fans of the Pumpkins are sure to be treated to 90’s classics “1979” and “Tonight, Tonight” as well as a good dose of new tracks from their latest album, Oceania. Make sure to get there early for English rockers Morning Parade, who could easily win over fans of Snow Patrol or Coldplay with their melodic and finely crafted songs, such as their current hit climbing the charts “Headlights”. They promise to be more than the average opening act, and a nice complement to Smashing Pumpkins’ sweeter side.

Real-Estate---Not-Normal---Mini--Crest-Hardware

Real Estate at Crest Hardware | New York Music News Highlights

Sometimes we dance to music in the isles at the grocery or hardware store, this time the band was there for real. There was fun for window shoppers as Real Estate played a set at Crest Hardware and Toby Maguire was not there. There might have been a Tony Maguire, but findings are unfounded. This show was a part of MINI’s Not Normal Campaign to bring music to familiar places. This was not normal but definitely familiar.

kesha-warrior

Ke$ha – Warrior (released Nov. 30, 2012) Kemosabe Records | New York Music News

kesha-warrior albumAre we sure that Ke$ha hasn’t cloned herself? Is it possible that Ke$ha’s latest album, Warrior, is the work of a secret girl group who collaborates in the recording studio but only let one member make public appearances in the most daring tax evasion scam ever created? There are multiple harmony tracks on nearly every song, with overdubbed background vocals, all over the lead vocal which sounds like a different singer from verse to verse. From the first track, the album’s namesake “Warrior”, through the entire 12 song collection, Ke$ha seems to show more range than the Spice Girls ever did. There has to be more than just one Ke$ha: we hear Pop Star Ke$ha, who delivers triumphant, sing-along vocals on “Die Young”; Rapper Kendra busts out lines like “feeling like I’m a high schooler/sipping on a warm wine cooler/hot ‘cause the party don’t stop/I’m in a crop-top/like I work at Hooters” on “C’Mon”; Dirty Mouth Ke$ha, who ryhmes “I’m over it/so suck my dick” on “Thinking of You”, as well as the army of Ke$ha background vocalists.

This five-for-the-price-of-one approach definitely distinguishes Ke$ha from her competition, a certain buxom blue-wigged babe and the Madonna-emulating mistress in the meat dress. Most pop stars find one thing that works for them and exploit it to the max; Ke$ha is taking the Baskin Robbins approach.

The first four or five songs of Warrior are typical Top 40 pop fare, sure to sell well with their embrace of whatever technology and studio gimmick is the trendiest this year, but once we reach the point where the listener would have to flip the vinyl LP over (ask your hipster older brother), things take a turn for the pleasantly bizarre.

“IT’S IGGY POP!” Rocker Ke$ha shouts over the pounding drums of “Dirty Love”. “YEAH!” responds an enthusiastic, you guessed it, Iggy Pop. (Your older brother saw Trainspotting, right?) “Santorum did it/in a v-neck sweater,” he growls, “pornos produce it/but a wild child can do it better.” Uncomfortable as it is to hear the sixty-five year old Iggy having a back and forth on sex with the forty-years-his-junior Ke$ha, it’s a fine bit of rock vocals match-making; Ke$ha can stand up to anything Pop could throw at her without blushing, as evidenced by her line “champagne tastes like piss to me.”

From there, we move into the ballad “Wonderland”, the manditory song that must appear on every stadium-concert music act’s third album that details how exhausting touring can be and reminisces about the “simple” days. The song betrays Ke$ha’s Nashville upbringing, and is the most grounded song on the album.

“Only Wanna Dance With You” begins with a herky-jerky guitar riff reminiscent of the Knack (text your older brother again) and then come the backing vocals from none other than Julian Casablancas of the Strokes; during the chorus, a robotic, Queen-like guitar solo by the Stroke’s own Fabrizio Moretti. (Trust me, your older brother WILL want to listen to this one.)

“Love Into the Light”, the final track on the non-deluxe version of Warrior has a Phil Collins “In the air tonight” vibe (you know, from that scene in the Hangover when Mike Tyson punches the guy with the beard). It makes for a good closer on what has been a wild party.

One of the stand-out tracks is only available on the Deluxe Version of Warrior, “Gold Trans Am”, which is right up there with Dead Milkmen’s “Bitchin’ Camaro” when it comes to songs about the fashion and lifestyle choices of GM-made muscle car owners. (Don’t bother your older brother again – just ‘Google’ it; Ke$ha would likely approve.) The song kicks off with Ke$ha singing/yelling, “Wham! Bam! Thank you, man! Get inside my fucking gold Trans Am!” A tempting offer, for sure – but is there enough room for one more in there with all those Ke$has?
